On Friday, May 3rd, 2024, Deloitte and Spring-UP Global Network held a brief and colourful ceremony to commission the seventh library under Deloitte’s WorldClass Initiative in Ghana to nurture the reading and writing skills of learners in the Hohoe Municipal of the Volta Region.
The library will serve three thousand one hundred and thirty-three (3,133) students in the seven (7) schools listed under the Hohoe East Cluster of Schools.
Receiving the library facility on behalf of the Ghana Education Service, the Volta Regional Director of Education (GES), Mr Francis Agbemadi, commended Deloitte and Spring-UP Global Network for partnering to complement the government’s efforts by providing library facilities. He also called on parents and teachers to guide and encourage children to develop the habit of reading, as reading is the bedrock of all other learning.
In her address, the Founder and Executive Director of Spring-UP Global Network said, “The commissioning of today’s library increases our impact to 19,925 learners. This means that more children are benefiting from the initiative than the initial target of 16,000 for all eight (8) libraries in the first year. On behalf of the entire SUGN team, I want to commend Deloitte for funding this project and continuously supporting the SUGN Project team in achieving this feat.”
She also added “The school library, which is being commissioned today, is the seventh school to benefit from Deloitte’s WorldClass Initiative in Ghana. It is a 50-seater capacity library stocked with thousand sixty-one (1,061) books, mainly African-authored, on topics such as literature, personal development, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The library also has a reading floor for learners in the early grades.”
On behalf of Deloitte, Madam Abena Biney, the Chief Sustainability Officer of Deloitte West Africa, said Deloitte is committed to making an impact that matters. By making libraries accessible to students, we will empower them with essential skills and knowledge, which will consequently shape a brighter future for our communities and beyond.
The ceremony was graced by community members, education stakeholders, and dignitaries including the representative of Togbe Adzima V, Chief of Gbi- Abansi, Hohoe; Mr Victor Kwaku Kovey, the Hohoe Municipal Director of Education (GES); Mrs Valerie Janet Datsa Agbotse (Rtd), Former Hohoe Municipal Director of Education (GES); Mr. Prince James Gafah, School Improvement Support Officer (SISO), Hohoe East Circuit; and Rev. Father Pascal Afesi, Parish Priest, St Augustine R/C Church, Hohoe, among others.
